Yikes! Who knew?
I was forwarded this video, and it’s potentialy scary.
Digital photocopiers have hard drives attached to them, allowing you to save documents, or forward them or email them, or fax them. When they are sold as used, the original hard drive is sometimes NOT wiped clean, and tons of previous documents are still present on the hard drive. This would be awesome if you’re interested in
- identity theft
- medical records
- legal records
- business records
- whatever is on there!
Fortunately, I don’t use these types of photocopiers in my office, and my documents are encrypted and secured. My plastic surgery office in San Francisco uses a secure server, similar to other medical software companies. Since doctors in the US have to follow HIPAA guidlines, I wonder how many medical centers or doctro office know about the dangers of photocopiers.
If you see a doctor and they use a photocopier attached to a hard drive, you may want to ask if they ever erase the hard drive.
