Sorry about the delay in posts, but I was alternately busy and lazy. I just got back from the ASAPS meeting in Washington, DC. It was a great event, and a little lighter in terms of attendance this year. Don’t worry, I’ll torture you with obscure plastic surgery factoids in the next couple of posts.
As background, ASAPS stands for the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. It’s members do mainly cosmetic surgery. They have to be Board Certified in Plastic Surgery, and then, after that, they have to do mainly Aesthetic/ Cosmetic Surgery to join. Yes, just like my Board Certification, I’ve been a member of ASAPS since the womb.
First up- PROJECT BEAUTY. ASAPS has done a bunch of studies, and they’re disturbing, at least to “real” plastic surgeons. Many people are still uneducated or unaware about what board certification means. 47 % of patients would consider having plastic surgery with their injector, even if their favorite injector isn’t a plastic surgeon! Yikes!
To combat this, one of the initiatives that the ASAPS is doing is Project Beauty, a website about beauty tips. They are virtually all NON surgical in nature. Hopefully, this will get the word out that beauty and plastic surgery go hand in hand, and not in the hands of a burnt out family practice doctor injecting stuff in a mall after taking a weekend course.
And not knowing all of the complications, how to reverse things, how to revise things, how to fix things, etc., but now I’m starting to babble……
