A facelift is meant to tighten not only the skin at the face, but also, the underlying soft tissue structures of the face to get a more rejuvenated, youthful appearance. The main structure every plastic surgeon talks about is the “SMAS“- superficial musculo-aponeurotic system. This is very thin, clear, strong tissue around the structures of the face. As a Plastic Surgeon, I tighten the SMAS and the skin to get the longest-lasting result.

The SMAS can be tightened onto itself, cut and stretched and re-sutured, or even rolled onto itself. The type of cuts, and where it reattaches, can also determine the best result for you, as an individual. There are a tremendous number of variations on facelift techniques.

In my opinion, there is no “best” facelift- there are too many variables. The best facelift for you depends on the your face, tyour medical history, how much time off to recover you can spare, and whether you want a maximum facelift or a more natural appearing one.

Facelifts are very effective, since they generate more tightening and longer lasting results that non-surgical treatments, such as laser, chemical peel, dermabrasion, dermal fillers, or Botox.

Remember, a facelift should make you appear more rejuvenated, but the hands of time continue to tick, so it WON’T STOP aging permanently. You should follow the post-surgery instructions of your plastic surgeon, along with excellent skin care afterwards, to get the longest lasting results. Skin care should include avoidance of the sun, use of sun screen, use of prescription grade skin care products, and possibly even “touch up” procedures to maintain the most youthful appearance.
