Patients often ask me if it’s OK to get a mammogram with a breast implant, or if the breast implant makes getting a mammogram harder.
Basically, without all of the medical lingo, getting a mammogram with breast implants is possible, and may actually help the visualization of the breast tissue. Breast implants are often placed UNDER the muscle, pushing the breast muscle/ pectoralis, breast tissue, and skin forward. This may, theoretically, push more breast tissue to be seen by the mammogram device. As long as the mammogram technician knows you have breast implants, the technician can use slightly different techniques to get the breast picture possible with the mammogram machine.
Once you talk to your family doctor about when you should get mammograms, rest assured that most mammogram technicians can get a great mammogram and ensure your long-term health.
The very geeky explanation is occasionally called the “Eklund” technique, and an introductory article is here-
