Immediately after your operation, you should avoid a hot tub until your incisions have completely healed. Of course, talk to the actual surgeon that’s operating on you for ANY medical advice, and not just some random blog- like this one.
There are several reasons why dunking your incisions is sub-optimal for wound healing.
- you don’t want any liquid to actually enter your body. Even though your incisions are closed with sutures, that does not mean that they are completely healed.
- Hot tubs have been shown to have very high concentrations of “M. Fortuitum”, a type of Mycobacterium that can cause infections. You probably want to keep your incisions optimally cared for and healing right after your procedure.
Ultimately, you should know how to take care of yourself BEFORE your surgery, which is why post-surgery instructions and recovery expectations should be discussed with your plastic surgeon and his/ her staff. If you haven’t done so, please contact your patient care coordinator NOW to get the best after-care instructions available.
