Where you decide to have surgery can potentially lower your costs for your surgical procedure.
Typically in the US, most Plastic Surgery procedures are done in an out-patient surgery center, or ASC/ ambulatory surgery center. ASC’s are great as a patient because they are typically clean, bright, more customer friendly, more efficient, and smaller than a hospital, so access to your loved ones is easier.
Hospitals have the overall medical advantage of having literally every potential service and medication available, “just in case” something happens. However, hopsitals tend to be more bureaucratic, unfriendly, less efficient, and more costly, than ASC’s. Sometimes hospitals will be price competitive. They’re not stupid- they know they are losing potential cases to the local ASC’s, so they may have overall similar operating room, medical supply, and anesthesia fees.
Which is best for you? I would, of course, talk to your doctor and figure out where the safest and most efficient place is. Most plastic surgery patients are younger and healthier than hospital patients, so both places may be appropriate. If you have multiple medical illnesses, then the local hospital may be a better choice. Sometimes it may not matter- your surgeon or you, the patient, may have a very strong preference. In the end, as long as your health is safe, talk to your surgeon and ask what the best choice is for you.
