Should I be like Heidi Montag and have several operations?

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt's How To Be Famous Book Launch Gets Low Coverage!

I’m sure you’ve heard in the news about the 10 operations on Ms. Heidi Montag, and her plastic surgeon, Dr. Frank Ryan. “OMG- 10 operations! She’s addicted to plastic surgery! How could Spencer allow her to do all of that stuff! Where are the ethics on operating on such a beautiful, young, healthy woman!” I don’t have all of the medical records, so I can’t and won’t comment on all of the speculation. Dr. Ryan has an excellent reputation, so in the end, it’s the doctor-patient relationship between both of them that matters.

A big subtlety missing in all of this is- how long should your operation be? If you’re having multiple operations, what should the total time be in the operating room?

A rough estimate, and one that is not scientifially proven at all, is about 6 hours of surgery. In general, the surgery is not necessarily the big risk. The bigger risk to you, as a patients, is the ANESTHESIA. General Anesthesia causes your heart rate to decrease, can lower your blood pressure, can slow down your breathing, and in terms of your body, may be a bigger risk over longer periods of time.

Some hospitals actually have a time limit on cosmetic procedures and length of operating time. There’s no hard or fast rule.

However, if your operation or operations take longer than 4-6 hours, you may want to

- ask if you can have another plastic surgeon assist. The assistant can do alot of stuff, and still not be the primary surgeon, to speed up your case

- break up your procedures, so that you will have to have another operation in the future. For example you may want to do your face at 1 operation, and your body at a different time in the future.

- maybe your plastic surgeon is not as time efficient as others. If you get several opinions for a breast augmentation, and you get time quotes of 1-4 hours, then you may want to sift through the consultations in your head and really figure out who can give you the best result in a given period of time.
