Cheap Plastic Surgery 3 – Go Overseas

In general, I’m not a huge fan of “medical tourism”.   Although increasing in popularity, it’s really restricted for most people to a 1-time event, the possibility to recover relatively quickly on the country where surgery was done, and the ability to get excellent post-op care back near the patient’s home.

You can always choose to get Plastic Surgery overseas.  The problem is that you will probably not have easy access to see your surgeon for post-op care, and you should make arrangements for post-op care in your home town.  This is even a problem in the US.  I see several patients in San Francisco who travel to see me, and I see rare patients who live in San Francisco who have had surgery overseas.  Remember-  if you have a complication, you have to pay somehow for your surgery.  Hopefully your insurance will pay for the necessary revision.  Otherwise, you’re on the hook.

Costs may also be the same, even if the price of the surgery is substantially lower. Remember, you have to fly somewhere and recuperate there. A loved one to take care of you and give you emotional support will mean the price of an additional airline ticket and increased hotel costs. Make sure you tabulate the costs ahead of time- you may be surprised.

Of course, there are other medical and legal ramifications about Medical Tourism. Here’s a downloadable PDF from the AMA/ American Medical Association about the topic.
